CCLG, along with many other children’s cancer organisations, marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) each year in September. While we work to raise awareness of childhood cancer all year round, during September we focus on increasing awareness of cancer in children, as well as the work we do to support children with cancer and their families.
The gold ribbon
The internationally recognised symbol for childhood cancer is the gold ribbon. During September, we encourage our supporters to wear a gold ribbon to help raise awareness. You can order your gold ribbon (and other CCAM items) from our online shop.
About childhood cancer
In the UK and Ireland, around five children are diagnosed with cancer each week. Thats around 1820 each year.
Cure rates for children are much higher than for most adult cancers. On average, 82% (over 8 in 10) of all children survive their cancer for five years or more. For some types of children’s cancer, the cure rate is much higher. However, for some types of childhood cancer, cure rates are much lower and less progress has been made. Further research is urgently needed.
Cancer remains the number 1 cause of death by disease for children. Sadly, around 230 children die from cancer each year.
Over the last 45 years, CCLG has played a key role in the major improvements in survival rates and standards of care for children. We bring together childhood cancer professionals to ensure all children receive the best possible treatment and care.
As there are still some childhood cancers with a poor outlook, and many treatments can have long lasting side effects, further research is vital, and the ultimate aim of CCLG is to cure as many children as possible while reducing the short and long-term effects of treatment. We fund and support research into childhood cancer.
Treatment is given in a specialist centre, often given many miles from home, and for some cancers will last for up to three years. Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience, and the emotional and practical implications of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment can be hugely challenging for the whole family. We help young patients and their families with our expert, high quality and award-winning information.
How you can help

As you may be aware NHS England (who commission our practices services) have set out a requirement that practices work together to ensure that patients are able to access services outside our normal hours of work (8.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday).

GHR and Eaglebridge PCNs have produced a plan based on services being provided from the individual practices and from a local practice-based Hub on Friday and Saturday.
This way of working is not new to us, we have been providing so called Extended Access services for the last five years, including the ability for our patients to access services locally on Saturdays.
The times we provide extended access services from our practice bases have been determined by analysing the preferences of our patients over the last five years, in particular we have been keen to offer services to enable patients who work a distance away from the practice to access services.
Each practice is currently publicising when services are available and we are proposing to add further services to our existing provision, from October 2022.
In addition to the services provided from each practice we are working with our neighbouring practices to offer appointments across the week and on Saturdays. As always, the availability of appointments will be dependent on our capacity, however, please ask the practice receptionist if you would ideally like an appointment outside the normal core hours. It is important to stress that the number of appointments offered outside the normal hours will only be a small proportion of our total appointments, as it is important that we do not undermine our normal level of service particularly given the current high levels of demand and our workforce challenges.
As we have stated we are sure that the time our practices provide services (outside of core hours) reflects the preferences of our patients, but we would be pleased to hear your views so that we can continue to evaluate the best times to offer services.

An official 999 service has now been launched in British Sign Language.
Using a dedicated smartphone APP or the 999 BSL website, callers will be connected to a 999 call handler via a BSL interpreter.

The NHS App is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet. Account verification is done centrally and you don’t need a password from your GP surgery.

The NHSBSA have released new Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for HRT products.
The SSPs apply to Oestrogel pump gel, Sandrena 0.5mg and 1mg gel sachets and Lenzetto spray.
Pharmacies are now allowed to switch patients to patches if they are unable to obtain a supply of the gels.
Pharmacies are also allowed to restrict the quantities to 3 months’ supply without contacting the prescriber.
Local pharmacies have been contacted to ensure they are aware of the SSPs.
